During the meeting, President Xi recalled US President Barack Obama's visit to China last November, and said he looked forward to talking with the US president later this year.

The Chinese president said he hoped the two sides would work together to enhance mutual trust and further boost cooperation, to ensure bilateral ties would grow along the right track of the new model for major-country relations.

Kerry said the extensive cooperation between the two sides had demonstrated the important roles of the two nations in addressing major international and regional issues.

Kerry added that Obama is looking forward to Xi's upcoming visit, when the two leaders are set to discuss issues of common concern.
